Why do metals lose electrons and nonmetals gain electrons in the formation of ionic bonds?

Metals generally have valency of 1 to 3. That means that they need to lose their respective number of electrons so that they can attain inert electronic configuration.
Whereas the non metals have to gain electrons to achieve the configuration.
