you add 8 to the 7 then divide the sum of 8 and 7 by -5 to get x= -3

-5x - 8 = 7
=> - 5x  = 7 + 8 
=> - 5x = 15 
=>   x  = 15 / -5 
=>   x   = - 3 ..
